katherine-waterston-joaquin-phoenix-inherent-viceHere’s the funny thing. Technically, the last comedy P.T. Anderson directed was the Adam Sandler film Punch Drunk Love, but lets be honest, all his films are funny, they just ride that line of dark humor that calls into question why you laughed at something so fucked up. Although, I don’t think this film is intended to be a comedy, this trailer sure does appear to have that going for it. In fact, this trailer looks more like a Coen Brother film than a P.T. Anderson, but I don’t mind that.

This fall is gearing up for some major hitters and it wouldn’t be complete without a P.T. Anderson film. This one stars Joaquin Phoenix as Doc Sportello a private eye whose ex girlfriend suddenly shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” except that this one usually leads to trouble.

The film stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master,” “Walk the Line”), Josh Brolin (“True Grit,” “No Country For Old Men”) and Owen Wilson (“The Royal Tennenbaums,” “Midnight in Paris”); Katherine Waterston (“Michael Clayton,” “Boardwalk Empire”); Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) and Benicio Del Toro (“Traffic”); Martin Short (“Frankenweenie”); Jena Malone (“The Hunger Games” series); and musician Joanna Newsom.

Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will Be Blood,” “The Master”) directed “Inherent Vice” from a screenplay he wrote based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon. Anderson also produced the film, together with Oscar-nominated producers JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi (“There Will Be Blood”). Scott Rudin and Adam Somner served as executive producers.

INHERENT VICE, in theaters December 2014.
